Columbia Artists Unite for Women in Politics

Nine Columbia artists under the name Columbia Artists for Women in Politics will show examples of their work at the 2009 Leading Women reception and dinner being held by the Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics at the Clarion Townhouse Hotel on Friday, May 1st.  The work will be on sale at the event and the artists will share the proceeds with the Institute on an equal basis.

Artists exhibiting their works include:

  • Painting - Maria Hewitt, Laura Spong, and David Yaghjian
  • Mixed Media Painting and Collage - Heidi Darr-Hope 
  • Mixed Media - Pat Callahan 
  • Handcrafted Jewelry - Cindy Saad 
  • Fiber - Susan Lenz
  • Pencil - Cindy Waites
  • Sculpture - Ellen Emerson Yaghjian

In addition, Gumshoe Books will be exhibiting books by and about artists and writers who were a part of the Charleston Renaissance.  

The 2009 Leading Women reception on Friday, May 1, will honor Barbara Neilson, former SC Superintendent of Education and Liz Patterson, former US Congresswoman from the 4th District.  On Saturday, May 2, the Southeastern Institute will provide a day long series of training sessions for women featuring the state's top consultants and activists. The sessions will provide information for women who are interested in running for elected and appointed office in South Carolina.
