SC Group Asks Next Gov Not to Overlook Women
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A group trying to narrow South Carolina's political gender gap wants to help the next governor put more women on boards and in charge of state agencies.
The nonpartisan Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics is seeking resumes of interested women. It has asked gubernatorial candidates to agree not to overlook qualified women in their appointments.
Democrat Vincent Sheheen has already signed the pledge. Republican Nikki Haley said she likes the goal but won't make such a commitment.
Project director Candy Waites said Tuesday the group will send qualified resumes to whoever wins in November. Waites says the goal is to remove the excuse that women weren't picked because none were known.
Gov. Mark Sanford has appointed women to about a third of 1,800 appointments.
